Edit Equipment Fields

We discussed the basics of editing equipment fields in the Equipment Layout topic. But let's discuss more details about equipment editing. When a field is requested for editing (by clicking on a hyperlink on the Equipment View), two checks occur before any edits:

  1. Check if the equipment is locked to another user. If the equipment is locked, you will see the dialog below - and editing will be aborted:

    Locked Equipment Alert

  2. Check if the profile of the current user (including any company exception for the profile) allows editing of this field. If not, the editing will be aborted:

    Security Block for Field Editing

If these two checks pass, the Edit Equipment Field dialog is displayed

The edit control in this dialog will vary depending on the type of field being modified. Text fields with an associated add/edit list will use a drop-down pre-populated with available choices. Date-based fields will have a date selector control (see Date Entry). Numeric fields will often display a calculator control.

Comment-based fields have a couple of additional options available by right-mouse click.

Edit Equipment Field - Comment Fields

·Proportional Font - this option is selected by default, meaning the font used in the comment is 'Tahoma.' The comment will appear in 'Courier' font if this option is unchecked. Using a non-proportional font like 'Courier' temporarily for editing can be helpful if you need to line up the text on multiple lines in exact columns. Note: if you rely on a non-proportional font during editing, then it is advisable to modify the Equipment Layout's display of the related comment field to use a non-proportional font also.

·Add From Note Types - this option will pop up a dialog where you can select from Note Types that have been added for the current company through the Add/Edit...Equipment Info...Note Types list.

See the Equipment Layout topic for details on closing/exiting the Edit Equipment Field dialog.

Upon the close of the Equipment View, two checks occur:

1. Required Field - check to see if the field is required based on the current security profile. See the 'Requiring Equipment Information' security category in Profile Manager for more details. If the field is required and the value is still blank, then the following dialog will be displayed for example:

98013415

Required Field Alert

2. Field Validations - check to see if the field requires validation against the drop-down list - based on the current security profile. See the 'Validating Equipment Information' security category in Profile Manager for more details. If the value is new to the list and the security profile requires a prompt before automatically adding to the list, then the following dialog will be shown (example):

If the security profile requires validation but does not want items automatically added to the list, then the following dialog will be shown (example):
